MICROSOFT / OUTLOOK / HOTMAIL

Your Microsoft password may not be the problem.

If Microsoft accepts your password but sends a code to an old phone, another password reset will not fix that. We’ll look at the screen together, figure out which sign-in step is stopping you, and use the Microsoft option that applies.

FIRST, NAME THE LOGIN

Which number or password is Microsoft asking for?

Windows PIN

Unlocks this computer.

Microsoft password

Signs into your personal Microsoft account, including Outlook.com or Hotmail.

Verification code

A temporary number sent to a phone, email, or other method already connected to the account.

Microsoft Authenticator

An app that may approve the sign-in or show a code.

PERSONAL OR ORGANIZATIONAL?

The recovery path depends on who controls the account.

Personal Microsoft account

Often used for Outlook.com, Hotmail, OneDrive, Microsoft 365 Personal, Xbox, and a Windows sign-in. Microsoft’s consumer Sign-in Helper and recovery form may apply.

Work or school account

An employer or school may control the password, Authenticator registration, and other verification methods. Its help desk or administrator may need to reset those methods. Microsoft’s consumer recovery form is not a substitute for the organization’s support process.

MICROSOFT’S OWN OPTIONS

Start with Sign-in Helper to see what applies.

The recovery form may help some personal accounts, but it cannot bypass two-step verification if you cannot use any alternate method. If Microsoft directs you to the form, gather the details it asks for before trying again. Microsoft explains the recovery-form limits here (opens official provider support in a new tab).

“I don’t have any of these”

This can start a process to replace the security information on a personal account, often with a waiting period. It is separate from filling out the recovery form. Read the screen before you proceed.

If Microsoft directed you to the recovery form

If a form attempt was rejected, gather older passwords, contacts, exact email subject lines, and other account details before another attempt. Microsoft currently allows up to two attempts per day. Submitting the same incomplete answers again will not solve a missing two-step verification method.

AUTHENTICATOR & SIGNED-IN DEVICES

“I got a new phone” can change the problem.

If Authenticator was on the previous phone, installing the app on the new phone does not automatically recreate every approval method. The available recovery steps differ between personal Microsoft accounts and work or school accounts.

For a work or school account, the organization’s help desk may need to clear or re-register the verification method. Review Microsoft’s work or school verification guidance (opens official provider support in a new tab).

Still signed in somewhere?

Do not sign out of a working computer, browser, phone, Outlook session, or Microsoft app until you understand what it can do. A working session may help you identify the account, review security information, or preserve access to important data while recovery is underway.

Check first. Change one thing at a time.

WHEN LIVE HELP MAKES SENSE

When Microsoft’s names and screens stop making sense.

We can identify which account and sign-in step the screen is asking about, check what access remains, and work through the Microsoft choices that apply.

If the recovery address is a Google or Gmail account or Yahoo Mail account that you cannot access, that email may need attention first.

SAFE, LEGITIMATE HELP

Your account stays in your control.

I can help you understand what is blocking access and work through the legitimate recovery options provided by the platform. I work with the account owner or someone authorized to manage the account. I cannot bypass security checks, impersonate an owner, change the platform’s decision, or guarantee that an account can be recovered.

Please do not email or text me passwords, verification codes, recovery keys, or identity documents before a session. During a live support session, I may help you enter information when needed, but I do not save or retain passwords, verification codes, recovery keys, or identity documents.

If a provider requests an identity document, submit it only through that provider’s official interface. You remain present and in control throughout the session.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Straight answers before you book.

Can Steve reset my Microsoft password?

I can help you use Microsoft’s legitimate reset and recovery tools, but I cannot reset the password inside Microsoft, change account details, or approve access.

What if the Microsoft code goes to my old phone?

Look for another verification method and check devices where the account may still be signed in. If Microsoft offers “I don’t have any of these,” read the resulting security-information process carefully before continuing.

What does “I don’t have any of these” mean?

It means the verification methods Microsoft displayed are unavailable to you. Microsoft may offer a process to replace security information, which can include a waiting period.

Should I submit the recovery form again?

Only if Microsoft directs you to that form. It cannot bypass two-step verification when you have no alternate method. If it applies, Microsoft currently allows up to two attempts per day; gather accurate account details before trying again.

What if this is a work or school account?

Contact the organization’s help desk or administrator. It may control your password and verification methods, and the consumer recovery form may not apply.

ONE-ON-ONE REMOTE HELP

Choose the time that fits the problem.

You do not need to diagnose it before booking. Have the devices you use for this account nearby and know what phone number or email address the account may be tied to.

ONE FOCUSED PROBLEM

30 minutes · $49

A good fit for one account, a known problem, the relevant devices nearby, and a straightforward recovery diagnosis or legitimate recovery attempt.

MORE TO UNTANGLE

45 minutes · $79

More room for several accounts or devices, an inaccessible recovery email, suspected compromise, multiple failed attempts, or a problem that is still unclear. You may still choose 30 minutes.

Booking time does not guarantee that the provider will restore access. It gives us time to understand the problem, work through the available options, and identify a clear next step.
